Separate active streaming and network standby
A digital media player can stream, update and remain ready for network commands. ENERGY STAR treats digital media players as a distinct product category and compares their efficiency with other ways to stream. For a personal estimate, record active hours and the lower-power period separately.
If the device is powered by the TV’s USB port, note whether that port switches off with the television. If it uses its own adapter, measure the complete adapter-and-device combination. The adapter rating is a maximum capability, not proof of continuous draw.
Build an annual two-mode calculation
Assume 5 W active for four hours and 1 W for 20 hours each day. Daily energy is (0.005 × 4) + (0.001 × 20) = 0.040 kWh. Across 365 days that is 14.6 kWh, costing $2.63 at $0.18/kWh. This is one transparent scenario, so replace its power and schedule inputs with exact measurements.
This example shows why every mode and hour must add to 24. Do not calculate 24 standby hours and then add active hours on top. A whole-day meter reading can be multiplied by 365 directly if the measured day is representative.
| Active / standby | Daily energy | Annual energy | Annual cost at $0.18/kWh |
|---|---|---|---|
| 3 W × 4h / 0.5 W × 20h | 0.022 kWh | 8.03 kWh | $1.45 |
| 5 W × 4h / 1 W × 20h | 0.040 kWh | 14.60 kWh | $2.63 |
| 7 W × 6h / 2 W × 18h | 0.078 kWh | 28.47 kWh | $5.12 |
Keep the rest of the entertainment system separate
The TV, soundbar, subwoofer, router and external storage each consume electricity. Measure the stick alone for a device figure or the complete compatible power strip for a system figure. Do not mix those boundaries between alternatives.
Streaming with a game console or computer may provide different features. Compare the same viewing hours and include each complete setup before claiming one route saves energy.
Preserve updates and usability
Use manufacturer-supported sleep and power settings. Do not interrupt software updates or disconnect power in a way that causes repeated downloads, lost settings or unsupported behavior.
Record one normal week, including days without streaming. A measured weekly total captures actual standby and active use more reliably than a single maximum-wattage multiplication.
