The useful answerA console averaging 120 W for a three-hour session uses 0.36 kWh and costs about $0.06 at $0.18/kWh. The console-only hourly cost is about $0.02. Measure the game and mode you use, then add the display and audio equipment separately if you want the whole setup.

Define active play separately

Console power can change with the game, menu, streaming mode and system settings. For cost per hour, measure cumulative energy during a representative active-play session and divide by the measured hours. That average is more useful than a maximum rating or a momentary reading taken during one scene.

The European Commission describes voluntary console-efficiency commitments that address active and standby energy. Government energy guidance also distinguishes operating and standby use for electronics. Keep those modes separate: this page estimates active use, while the existing rest-mode guide addresses energy between sessions.

Calculate the console-only session

Suppose a meter records an average of 120 W across three hours. Convert 120 W to 0.12 kW, then multiply: 0.12 × 3 = 0.36 kWh. At $0.18/kWh, the session costs $0.0648, or about $0.06. Thirty equal sessions use 10.8 kWh and cost $1.94.

For one hour, 0.12 kWh × $0.18 equals $0.0216, or about two cents. Rounding an hourly result before multiplying many hours can create a noticeable error, so keep the unrounded number in the calculation and round only the final cost.

Add the rest of the setup explicitly

A TV, monitor, receiver, speakers and network equipment can add energy, but a console meter does not capture them. Measure each compatible plug-in device or the complete power strip only when its electrical rating and instructions permit. Label the result “whole setup” instead of attributing every kWh to the console.

Streaming video through a console is also a different workload from active gaming. If you are deciding between devices for a repeated activity, measure the same content duration and include the display on both sides. This turns a vague product comparison into a defined service comparison.

Use the estimate to change a schedule

Count real weekly sessions, then add rest-mode energy using the separate guide. A player using the console for three hours twice a week has a different annual pattern from a household using it daily, even if the same model is involved.

Enable supported power-management options and install system updates according to the manufacturer. Recheck measurements after changing a setting so that the claimed saving comes from evidence. Do not interrupt updates or use external switching that conflicts with the product instructions.
