Follow the maintenance instructions
Use the dryer’s manual for locating, removing and cleaning its filters. Vented and ventless machines can have different maintenance points, so a checklist for a neighbor’s dryer may not suit yours. Do not remove panels, bypass sensors or improvise access to internal parts.
USFA guidance also addresses dryer vents. In a rental or shared laundry room, find out who is responsible for inspection and servicing. A filter you can clean yourself does not establish that the rest of the air path is clear.
Record what changed
Write down the normal program, load type, washer spin setting and approximate drying time. Note when longer cycles began and whether every load is affected. Include displayed fault codes exactly as shown. This creates a useful maintenance report without guessing at an internal failure.
If the machine shows signs of unsafe operation, stop using it and follow its safety instructions. Do not run repeated test loads to collect an energy comparison when a safety concern is unresolved.
Translate extra sessions into cost
Suppose laundry previously needed 16 sessions per month, but four loads now need an additional session. If each extra session hypothetically uses 1.20 kWh, the additional consumption is 4.80 kWh, costing about $0.86 at $0.18/kWh.
That calculation quantifies the observed extra work. It does not prove lint caused the problem or predict how much cleaning will save. Damp starting loads, settings and appliance faults can also affect the result.
Verify the outcome after service
After appropriate maintenance, compare ordinary loads with the same program and starting conditions. Record whether drying performance has returned and whether extra cycles remain necessary. Avoid comparing one heavy blanket before service with light shirts afterward. Keep the dated observations for the landlord or service provider. The goal is reliable drying and proper care; the energy estimate helps explain the cost of a recurring problem without substituting for diagnosis.
