Separate connected hours from active power
A dehumidifier can stay plugged in and available all day while its compressor cycles according to the humidistat, bucket status, defrost behavior and room conditions. Multiplying the compressor’s rated input by 24 hours assumes uninterrupted operation.
For a whole-day measurement, leave idle periods inside the observation. If the device uses 4.8 kWh from one morning to the next, that reading already includes the cycle pattern for those conditions. Do not apply a second guessed duty-cycle discount.
Turn a daily kWh reading into cost
At 4.8 kWh per day and $0.18/kWh, the daily cost is $0.864, rounded to $0.86. Thirty equal days use 144 kWh and cost $25.92. A measured 2.4 kWh day costs half as much; a 7.2 kWh day costs 50% more.
Use the actual number of days in the period. A 31-day month at 4.8 kWh daily uses 148.8 kWh and costs $26.78 at the same rate.
If your utility uses tiered or time-dependent pricing, apply the rate that covers the measured consumption rather than a promotional headline rate. Keep fixed account charges outside this appliance-only calculation because they usually do not change with one device.
| Measured energy/day | Cost/day at $0.18 | 30 equal days |
|---|---|---|
| 2.4 kWh | $0.43 | $12.96 |
| 4.8 kWh | $0.86 | $25.92 |
| 7.2 kWh | $1.30 | $38.88 |
Expect the first days to differ from maintenance days
A damp space can demand more operation while moisture is first reduced. Later days may require less energy to maintain the chosen relative humidity, or more if outdoor moisture, leaks, laundry or open doors change the load.
Record relative humidity, setting, temperature, water removed and interruptions beside the energy total. ENERGY STAR notes that temperature and placement can affect operation and recommends addressing moisture sources rather than relying on dehumidification alone.
Use continuous availability for a defined reason
Follow the manual for drainage, clearances, cleaning, operating temperature and electrical safety. If a hose is used, route it as directed and away from electrical connections and trip hazards. A cost estimate does not make an improvised drain arrangement safe.
Investigate persistent leaks, condensation or building defects. The appliance can manage moisture, but it does not repair the source. In a rental, keep a dated record for the responsible maintenance contact.
