Prefer energy per complete cycle
An electric dryer changes power as the drum, fan and heater operate. A sensor cycle can end earlier than its maximum displayed time. The cleanest cost input is kWh for the complete load from start to the selected dryness.
If product data provides estimated annual kWh under a defined number of test cycles, divide only when you preserve those assumptions. Your fabric mix, starting moisture, load size and selected dryness can produce a different cycle result.
Calculate cost per load and per month
At 2.5 kWh per cycle and $0.18/kWh, electricity costs $0.45 per load. Eight loads cost $3.60; 20 loads cost $9.00. This invented 2.5 kWh input teaches the formula and is not a typical value for every dryer type.
A compact ventless dryer, resistance dryer and heat-pump dryer can have different energy and time. Compare complete cycles that dry similar loads, not only their rated watts.
For an annual budget, multiply energy per comparable load by the number of loads you realistically dry. Keep gas-fuel cost separate for a gas dryer; its electrical consumption alone does not represent the complete operating cost.
| Loads/month | Monthly energy | Cost at $0.18/kWh |
|---|---|---|
| 8 | 20 kWh | $3.60 |
| 12 | 30 kWh | $5.40 |
| 20 | 50 kWh | $9.00 |
Explain why the same dryer changes
Clothes leaving the washer wetter require more moisture removal. Load composition, load size, lint and airflow, cycle choice and sensor behavior can change time and energy. ENERGY STAR advises using moisture sensors, avoiding over-drying and cleaning the lint filter.
Record washer spin setting and approximate load type when comparing cycles. A shorter timer is not automatically a fair test if clothes finish at a different dryness.
Compare ownership with the same laundry routine
For a replacement decision, estimate annual cycles and multiply each candidate’s comparable per-cycle or annual energy by your rate. Add purchase and installation costs separately. A heat-pump dryer can reduce energy use but may have different cycle time, drainage, maintenance and upfront cost.
Do not claim a universal payback. Use a low, middle and high annual-load scenario, and keep the ownership period shorter than any lifespan you have no evidence to promise.
