Choose an equivalent meal
The Energy Saving Trust points out that ovens can suit batch cooking, while a smaller appliance can be economical for a smaller quantity. That is a starting point for a comparison, not a universal winner for every recipe.
Write down the portion count and what must be cooked. Include preheating, all batches and any extra equipment needed. Compare methods that achieve an appropriate cooking result under the recipe and appliance instructions. A half-finished or smaller meal is not an equivalent outcome.
Use total energy rather than rated watts alone
Suppose a hypothetical air-fryer session uses 0.45 kWh and an oven session uses 0.9 kWh for the same two-person meal. At $0.18/kWh, they cost $0.081 and $0.162 respectively, a difference of 8.1 cents per meal.
At 20 such meals each month, the difference is $1.62. If the smaller appliance must instead run two identical 0.45 kWh batches, it reaches 0.9 kWh and the modeled energy advantage disappears. Real second batches may behave differently; measure the full sequence rather than assuming they repeat exactly.
Include the purchase and the kitchen space
If an additional appliance costs an illustrative $80 and saves $1.62 monthly in the first scenario, energy-only payback is about 49.4 months. Other benefits may matter, but the calculation does not support buying it solely on an assumption of immediate large bill savings.
Check storage, working clearances and whether the appliance can serve the meals you prepare. Keep required ventilation and electrical arrangements. Do not position a hot appliance in a confined area merely because its footprint fits there.
Make a useful comparison log
Record the method, food quantity, starting conditions, preheat, program, batches and complete kWh total. If there is no suitable measurement, label a calculation based on average power and duration as a scenario. A rated maximum wattage is not proof of a constant draw throughout a thermostatically controlled cycle.
